Electronic Devices – FAQs
| Q. | Which devices are available for circulation? |
| A. | The Heights Libraries offer 18 devices for customers to check out: nine NOOKs, eight Kindles, and one NOOKcolor. |
| Q. | What are these devices and what do they do? |
| A. | NOOKs and Kindles are eReaders which allow users to download electronic books and periodicals and read them on the device. They can store a large library of up to 1,500 titles before adding memory to the device. Some eReaders also offer additional features, such as Web browsing capabilities and games. |
| Q. | Why is the library circulating electronic devices? |
| A. | Interest in these devices has been rapidly climbing. Circulation of eBooks within the CLEVnet library consortium has increased by over 90% in the past year. Librarians have been fielding more and more questions about eBook readers, especially from customers who are considering purchasing a device. Circulating electronic devices serves several purposes. It gives customers an opportunity to try these products and make more informed purchasing decisions. It provides library customers an opportunity to try a different reading experience. It also allows the Heights Libraries to experiment with new ways of serving our customers. |
| Q. | Who can borrow an electronic device? |
| A. | Electronic devices may be checked out by library cardholders in good standing who are 18 years of age or older and who have a picture ID with their current address. |
| Q. | Where do I go to check out an electronic device? |
| A. | Electronic devices are available at all four of our locations. To find out if an eReader is available to check out, visit the Audio Visual section and look for the “Availability Card” on display. Take this card to the Customer Service Desk to check out the device. |
| Q. | How long can I keep an electronic device? Will I be charged if I return the device late? |
| A. | The eReaders may be checked out for up to 2 weeks. They may not be renewed for an additional time. Overdue fees for eReaders are in the amount of $5.00 per day. |
| Q. | Why do I have to sign a Borrowing Agreement to check out an electronic device? |
| A. | Signing the Borrowing Agreement indicates that you have read, understand, and agree to the conditions of use. The Borrowing Agreement provides information regarding the loan period as well as associated charges for late return and damaged or missing items. |
| Q. | Do I have to download content to the device? |
| A. | All of the devices are preloaded with content for your enjoyment. Titles have been selected to represent various age levels and genres. At this time, you are not able to transfer content from CLEVnet’s Digital Library to the library owned electronic devices. Content cannot be transferred from the electronic device to your personal computer or another device. |
