Mayer Hawthorne: Redux

It’s a bit rare for me to gush over a musician. What can I say? I’m pretty hard to please. But, when a fantastic artist comes along that I can’t stop listening to and talking about, I have to, well…talk about them! My current obsession: Mayer Hawthorne. I previously wrote about Mayer,  http://heightslibrary.org/wordpress/music/?p=61, when I discovered his first CD, A Strange Arrangement. He’s been in my rotation ever since, but he has recently rocketed to the top of my playlist. Last May, Mayer released a free download of his EP, Impressions – The Covers. Of course I jumped on this and played the heck out of it! Just a few months later, his second full-length release, How Do You Do, was released. Let me tell ya, this CD is EXCELLENT! His music still has the same late ’60s-early ’70s soul vibe, but the grooveometer was definitely ratcheted up, with songs that make you wanna dance as you sing along! I also detected a bit of a Yacht Rock feel and a solid nod to the funk era. Mayer still croons and moves with his beautiful falsetto, but he now he’s showing his fans that he can also groove with the best of them.

I had the distinct pleasure of seeing Mayer this past Monday at the House of Blues; I had been waiting for this since I first heard A Strange Arrangement. I knew he would put on a good show, but I did not expect to be blown out of my socks by such an amazing performance. His voice, which sounds so achingly sweet on wax, is even sweeter live, in company with the great voices of The County, his band. He performed, it seemed, an even amount of songs from both of his LP releases and a few numbers from the EP. He even snuck in,  Love in Motion,  a song by SebastiAn on which Mayer performed guest vocals. That song nearly tore the house down! He’s a very funny guy and even took a moment to let the audience take pictures of him and The County. He also had his drummer take a picture of him, sitting in a leather lounge chair, in front of the audience. If you look close enough (he tweeted the pic), you can see three, crazily, adoring fans: Lovelyleslie, my daughter, and me! Mayer, for me, is the epitome of what music entertainer should be. He puts out fantastic music, that makes you feel good, his live show is spectacular and he seems very down-to-earth, to boot. You couldn’t ask for anything more.

If you like fun rock and roll music that causes you to dance and sing then you definitely should check out Eric Hutchinson. The 31 year old from Washington DC has been influenced by other singer/songwriters such as Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Paul Simon, Prince, and the Beatles. His music style is rock, pop, and folk. It has been called intelligent pop with a feel good vibe.

Eric’s songs have been featured on many TV shows such as Grey’s Anatomy and he has performed on Jimmy Kimmel, Conan O’Brien, Jay Leno, and Craig Furguson. Hutchinson has also been named an AOL About To Pop artist, Yahoo! Who’s Next Artist, MSN One To Watch Artist and a VH1 You Oughta Know Artist. Hutchinson recorded a theme song for ESPN’s popular Fantasy Focus podcast.

I had the pleasure of seeing Eric for the second time this past Saturday. He played songs from his latest cd, Moving Up and Living Down as well as songs from Sounds Like This. No matter what the song Eric had the crowd’s attention with his fun and upbeat music. He has a great stage presence. At one point he even serenaded a young lady in the crowd who skipped her senior prom for the concert. Eric is a great artist and I think his music would be a fantastic addition to any outdoor activity this summer. Check out www.erichutchinson.com and follow him on Twitter @EricHutchinson.

Key Tracks: All Over Now, The Basement, Breakdown More, Outside Villanova, Best Days, Watching You Watch Him

Think Think Think Think Think Think Happy!

April 26, 2012

Last year, my blog-mate, lovelyleslie, wrote about the healing power of music, and how music can make you feel better in the face of illness or the loss of a loved one. But what about everyday stress from your job or other worries? Let’s face it, we all feel down sometimes, but we also need to [...]

I Am a Troublemaker!

March 27, 2012

This past weekend, my daughter and I headed to Beachland Ballroom to check out one of my favorite artists, Van Hunt. Initially, my plan was to write this post about Van’s live show, though I was a bit reticent because I’ve written about him recently. I was very pleasantly surprised, however, when inspiration struck in [...]

The Voice Project

March 12, 2012

Recently a friend introduced me to The Voice Project. What is The Voice Project? It is a peace movement that uses music to help the women’s groups in Africa that are affected by the violence from the ongoing war of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA). The women of northern Uganda have come together to help [...]

This Wub’s for You!

March 2, 2012

I’ve been meaning to write a post about Dubstep for a long time, and I have to confess it’s all my daughter’s fault. Many a day, I have come home to an impromptu dance party; my windows shaking, housequaking, and bass pumping deep in my chest. I fought the pull of the music for a [...]

Still Underground And Dig It

February 20, 2012

The last blog post about Morwenna Lasko and Jay Pun has me very excited as a music fan because it gave me the opportunity to introduce their music to people that probably never heard of it. Through this I began following the duo on twitter and noticed that they have had tweets with the tag [...]

Morwenna Lasko & Jay Pun – A Sound All Their Own

January 23, 2012

Another accidental discovery is how I found Morwenna Lasko & Jay Pun. This links to being a fan of the Dave Matthews Band. One of the band members, Rashawn Ross along with Lasko and Pun recorded a tribute song to the fallen dmb saxophonist LeRoi Moore. The song is titled One Moore Farewell  and can be [...]

In Memoriam: Amy Winehouse

December 31, 2011

We lost a lot of great performers this year: from Nick Ashford, whose music and influence will surely be eternal to Heavy D, a pioneer in “feel good” Hip Hop. I don’t think many people would argue that the passing of Amy Winehouse was a pretty huge deal. Yes, we all knew it was a [...]
